How the process works

Once you feel you have enough cash to meet your short-term expenditure needs and possible emergencies, investing for the long term can help to provide the opportunity to generate a better return than a cash savings account.

Investing is the process of buying assets e.g. stocks & shares, property and fixed income that can increase in value over time. Investment returns will be in the form of income payments and/or capital growth, although these cannot be guaranteed.

Depending upon your investment objectives and attitude to risk we are able to advise you on the most suitable investment strategy. It is important to review your investments on a regular basis to ensure they are performing in line with expectations, are as tax efficient as possible and continue to match your attitude to risk, your needs and priorities.

As independent financial advisers, we are able to advise you on a wide range of investments and on appropriate tax wrappers e.g. individual savings accounts (ISA) to help you mitigate personal tax.

Managing a portfolio, be it for capital growth or to provide an income, is seen as the most important aspect of financial planning for many clients. We fully appreciate the value it brings in terms of planning in areas such as retirement and school fees through to funding of long-term care – or just providing peace of mind that there will be enough money to last for the rest of your life.

Personal tax planning is something we consider in all of our recommendations. For example, this might include planning for inheritance tax mitigation, using pensions and investments where tax treatment is favourable or maximising the use of tax reliefs. This will vary depending on individual circumstances but will always be a consideration in any advice we may give you.

    Frequently Asked Questions

We often recommend having about six months’ worth of income as cash to cover short-term expenditures and possible emergencies. If you know you want to spend money on one-off items or projects in the short term e.g. within five years, then this amount should also remain readily accessible.

Rather than picking and buying individual company stocks & shares, a fund is a collective investment which gives you exposure to many different markets, companies, sectors and geographical regions, which helps diversify your holdings and can help spread your risk.

Active funds are run by professional fund managers who will pick and choose investments and their success depends on the three factors of cost, market opportunity and manager skill.

Passive funds, or index tracking funds will be managed but only to the extent of replicating the performance of a given market or index, such as the FTSE 100 or the Dow Jones index. The fees for running a passive fund are generally much lower than an active fund.

An accumulation fund will reinvest any generated income from the underlying holdings back into the fund with the aim of increasing its value.

An income fund will seek to generate a steady income through dividend or interest payments made from the underlying holdings and is paid out to you.

You should review your investments on a regular basis to ensure:

    • they continue to meet your investment objectives, which may change over time
    • they continue to meet your return expectations
    • the blend of investments doesn’t change to the detriment of your chosen level of risk
